The Visitors Center. Joseph Smith Jr. was born on his grandfather's farm on Dec. 23, 1805. He lived here with his parents until age 3. Then they moved due to crop failures. In 1905 Junius Wells approached the Church leaders about buying the old Solomon Mack farm and building a memorial to Jpseph Smith.
Junius Wells commissioned a local quarry to sculpt a 38.5 ft (11m) tall obelisk in 1905. The each foot of height represents 1 year of Joseph Smith's life. It took 7 weeks to move the obelisk and base from the quarry to this site. At the time, it was the largest spire in the US cut from a single piece of granite.
The LDS Church has obtained almost 200 acres of the original Mack farm and adjoining farmland. The memorial cottage and obelisk were completed just 4 days before the 100 anniversary of Joseph Smith's birth.
