Many temples have underground passages and shrines. We took a little boat up the Irrawaddy River and the lad took us to a couple of temples, including one where he gave us each a candle and then had to lit the underground passages with candles as we went along! This photo is actually of another temple which had electricity but the same steep steps going down.
Looking rather like a scene from "Oaklahoma" or similar, the traditional form of transport is the horse and cart. We did have one for a morning and even Nick admitted the gentle trot and peaceful movement was in soothing and in keeping with the thousands of temples, stupas etc. dotted across the plain.
Atune to the foreigner's sense of humour, the horse was called Madonna!
