The plaque in front of this cross reads: "Agosto Ramirez Monastario, OFM. on the 15th Anniversary of his martyrdom (1983-1998) In his memory for his great faith in giving his life for his friends dedicated to the poor and the struggle for Guatemala's peace." The plaque was dedicated by Families of Franciscans United and the Franciscan Order in Guatemala.
It's difficult to see in this photo, but the statue at the bottom window shows Jesus carrying his cross, the one above him is a statue of Jesus with his right arm bent at the elbow and his hand in a blessing with his index and next finger in a kind of peace sign. The third window from the bottom could be Jesus again in heaven or it could be a representation of God with a staff that looks like a tree. The top window seems to be the angel Gabriel with wings extended and a lance in his hand.
This is the scene associated with Palm Sunday when Jesus rides into town on a donkey and the villagers through palm fronds on the ground as he is passing.
Jesus is probably the most often copied figure in Antigua. All throughout the city you find Jesus statues being spruced up in preparation for Holy week coming up in March.
