ITALY_Chioggia - proud Venetians

Chioggia is a little town, hidden in the shadow of Royal City of Venice, but they are proud Venetans as well. Venetian lions are everywhere - not only on public buildings, but on private houses too.

ITALY_Chioggia - food in Veneto

Veneto's cuisine has less pizazz than those of some other regions of Italy. Coastal areas serve mainly seafood dishes, in the plains it is very popular to serve grilled meat. The most common dishes are: risi-e-bisi = rise & fresh peas (the local version of risotto); polenta (ground maize) which could be fried/ boiled/ grilled/ baked/ etc.; radicchio (purple leaves near oysters on photo) has a bitter and spicy taste, which mellows when it is grilled or roasted and divine tiramisu. Italian food comes wth wine and Veneto products many kinds of. We loved sparkling "Prosecco" (Italian white dry) with strong flavor of grapes. On the photo (right top) another typical one - cannoli. Molto gusto!

ITALY_Chioggia - the mix

All those are from Chioggia, Veneto. On the photo: in the upper left corner, door handle. Next - a weathervane. Below: beach huts in the nearby Sattomarina (nothing interesting - just a beach-town, connected to Chioggia by bridge), and yes, of course, fresh oysters from the local fish shop.

ITALY_Chioggia

Chioggia is a lil sis of Venice. It has same like Venice structure of town: few canals that cut the town, crossed with bridges, narrow calli (alleyways) that always ended with water, venetian windows and laundry,drying on air. All the rest is different. Venice is royal, famous, sparkling and lives from mass tourism and arts (mainly). Chioggia is a fisherman village - by mistake marked as "a town". It has one main street used as a weekly marked and prominade, few churches, variety of cafes & snackeries and complicated connecton by public transport to other places. In season it used as a bedroom of Venice, but the main difference - town lives from fishing, actually Chioggia is one of Italy's major fishing ports.

ITALY_Chioggia - meeting on the roof

Here is a management meeting. Seagulls - especially large ones- are resourceful, inquisitive and intelligent birds, demonstrating complex methods of communication and a highly developed social structure.

ITALY_Chioggia - water traffic

In Chioggia we received a "room with a view". It was very much upstairs (like 6th or 7th level), but we had a window to the canal. When fisherman's boats return from the sea we could watch the traffic from our room.

ITALY_Chioggia - gulls

In Chioggia we had a "the room with view". It was very much upstairs (like 6th or 7th level), but we had a window to the canal. When fisherman's boats return from the sea we could watch the traffic from our room. Gulls guarded fish-boats - kind of friendship with interest. Gull traffic increased proportionally to boat-traffic on the canal. Sometmes it seem that birds were going to enter into the opened window - so fast they cut the sky.
