At 726ft, Hoover Dam is one of the largest dams in the world. Built between 1931-36, it controls the flow of the Colorado River after it leaves the Grand Canyon. The dam provides electrical power and a reliable water supply to Nevada, California & Arizona.
The arch is now complete. The support wires will be removed as they start to install the roadway. Due to open in late 2010. Click on the tag 'dam' to compare the progress of the bypass from earlier photos.
The Nevada side bridge supports. The cable supports are due to be removed soon.
Intake towers. The low water in Lake Mead is a concern to all. Las Vegas depends on Lake Mead for its water supply. The low water level also affects how much water is released to make electrical power for the SW.

A statue of a 'high scaler' displayed outside the visitor center parking garage. High scalers had the most dangerous job at the dam site. These were the guys that swung across the rock face drilling holes for placement of dynamite.

The lake that was created by the dam now offers a serene spot for fishing. This man was casting a net to catch some fish.

Water is the source of life. It acts both as a cleaner, nutritive source, for cookery and for removing waste. Trash ends up in all the waterways.
After we toured the dam, we walked through the village which is associated with the dam.
