The one on the left (his right ankle) is a 3 year-old artificial ankle and is doing fairly well. The one on the right (his left ankle) needs a replacement also. It swells almost instantly when he walks on it, even with the boot on. It's bone-on-bone (arthritis and general deterioration) -- says he can feel the bones crunching together when he walks with it unsupported by the boot -- but even with the boot, he can only tolerate a short amount of walking. So thankful for the scooter!
The manual says you're not supposed to keep both hands on the steering handles, and you're not supposed to reach back to pull anything . . .
It might seem snobby, but actually it's a protection to keep the whole train from wandering through our sleeping quarters. Each sleeping car has an attendant, and each attendant is very much aware of the safety of her guests and their baggage.
