During one of our stops along the Highway #1 we spotted an elephant seal colony. Huge males were lounging around with their scarred chests and overhanging noses that earned them their name.
The big bull is on the top, left, surrounded by cows and calves.
The elephant seals flip sand onto their backs while on the beach to keep cool and protect their skin from the sun.
These animals were almost hunted to extinction for their oil-rich blubber. They are protected now and making a comeback.
The Elephant Seals only started returning to Point Piedras Blancas within the last decade.
