BETTING IN MYANMAR
BETTING ON IT. Young boys are placing bets during the Dummy Elephant Festival in Kyaukse, a small town near Mandalay, Myanmar. It is a familiar sight to see people betting during festival time, even though betting and gambling is officially illegal in the country. However, in early 2009, the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) has started opening gambling venues in at least nine villages in Mudon and Thanbyuzayat Townships. The games are being run in areas where gambling had previously not been allowed. Local residents are concerned about the activity’s impacts on their communities. ‘Most of the villagers spend their time gambling. They are lazy instead of working”, said a woman from the Nyang Gone village.
