Spending a few hours checking out the main markets in Mandalay and spied this colourful street food from 1st floor balcony.
Half-day trip to Mingun and time for lunch. Had just been informed at breakfast that morning at our hotel that eggs were off the menu due to the discovery of Avian Flu in chickens in the Mandalay area. The menu at the riverside restaurant was virtually all chicken, so we opted for fried noodles with vegetables. I particularly like the 'Fried chicken - Well Done or Half-Done' menu item. Que?
Half-day trip from Mandalay to Mingun, an hour's boat trip up and over the Irrawaddy River. This ruin is 1/3 the size it would have been if the earthquake of 18?? hadn't done it wrong.
Done the Hill and got the waiting trishaw driver to take us to the entrance of the Royal Place, a massive area in Mandalay. This view can be seen in the Lonely Planet I think. Pretty cruisy except for the military who have barracks in the Palace compound.
First day in Mandalay, took trishaw from hotel to base of Mandalay Hill and climbed it. Very hot but good fun. Bit hazy but could see Irrawaddy River with binoes.
Shot of the infamous Moustache Brothers, Pwe troupe (traditional Burmese entertainment) that combines music, drama and improvisation with a heavy dose of political satire that has seen Par Par Lay (performer in the middle) spend 7 years in jail for comments of support for Myanmar's Nobel peace prize winning democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi!
