This is the terminus station for all trains heading east to Siberia, Mongolia and other destinations. It is an open air station and a heaving mass of humanity - Russians, slavs, Kazaks, Mongols, backpackers (including us), gypsies, tramps and thieves. The recommendation is don't turn your back on your bags for even one second. nevertheless, a fascinating place.
We had to hang around for a few hours at Yaroslavsky Station, the Moscow terminus for all routes east.
To kill time on our last day in Moscow (the Trans-Siberian wasn't leaving until 10.00pm) we took a cruise on the Moscow River.
Moscow roads are teeming with speeding cars. The rule seems to be - the wider the road, the faster you go. Cars speed through the city in excess of 100kph and it is often impossible to cross over, even at pedestrian crossings. Best way is to use the many underground walkways or subway tunnels.
This is one of the really grand stations (I think I've spelt the name wrong). I found the subway quite daunting at first as all the signs are written in Russian cyrillic small type - there is no English translation, nor can anyone speak even a spattering of our language, unless you happen to randomly come across someone who can (rare). There are dozens of police and uniformed people strutting around the endless, dimly light marble corridors. I kept getting lost, getting off at wrong stations and wandering about stupidly. Then suddenly I got it and was soon moving about like a Muscovite, albeit one who couldn't speak, read or understand Russian.
The entrance to one of Moscow's grand subway stations. Some of these are smoke and mirrors - not real marble, just fancy paint effects over concrete. Others are as grand as they look.
I took a daytime reconnaisance trip on the Moscoe subway to check out our starting point for the Trans-Siberian as we were still nervous negotiating our way around this crazy city - and we didn't want any hiccups on departure day
A great view of 'Fawlty Towers' taken from the busy riverside road. Gum in the background left.
Another statue and fountain in the park. Hundreds of Moscovites loitered in the cool spray. We found a Kebab stall here run by a Syrian student who put together the best Kebab I've ever had for 100 roubles, and you get a cold draft beer for 150. Much better value than ripoff Gum. From now on we eat like locals.
Behind the Kremlin there is a shady park, along one side of which is this water feature used by teenagers as a swimming hole in the heatwave conditions
St Basil's, Red Square. The mother of all onion domed churches. I think this really is a metaphor for Russia, grand, elegant, historic and mad.
Not a great photo, but one of many taken through the train window. Moscow is a huge metropolis that grows out of the rural and forested landscape that surrounds it. This is the newest business district near the Railway terminus in the northwest of the city, all booming construction and flyovers
