The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the "Toy Train", is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, the railway is about 86 kilometers (53 mi) long. Its elevation level varies from about 100 meters (328 ft) at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 metres (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling. The track after Kurseong and New Jalpaiguri has now completely vanished due to earthquake few years back. A local train now runs between Darjeeling and Kurseong. We took a "Joy Ride" on this train running between Darjeeling at 2,200 meters (7,218 ft) and Ghum at 2,258 meters (7,407 ft). The train stops at Batasia for 10 minutes and proceeds to Ghum and stops at Ghum for 30 minutes & then returns back to Darjeeling. It was an experience... This "Toy Train" is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We were approaching Jorbanglo, a small township near Darjeeling situated at an height of 2520 meter or 8297 feet above sea level. It was a grand drive from Darjeeling which is at 2,050 meters or 6,710 ft. The grandeur of nature is at its best in Summer and as one drives one passes through picturesque villages and townships.
