The unusual rock formations around the Lighthouse are shaped largely by the constant wind, normally between 25 and 40 mph. They also match rock formations from the Los Angeles area and are unlike those on the mainland, north of San Francisco.
Workers had to haul materials and supplies by hand to build the lighthouse in 1870. If you look down from the narrow ridge leading to the point, this is what you see.
