Changing the Bogies - the wheel units - is supposedly one of the highlights of the Russian rail experience. Russia and Mongolia use a different rail gauge to the rest of the world, hence the need to raise the carriages, unbolt the wheels and slip a new set under the entire string of carriages. Note: It takes about two hours and you can't use the toilets while work is in progress.
Russian stations are elaborate and important buildings, even in small villages where the population live in less than salubrious dwellings.
