THE SKULLS OF BA CHUC.A grim reminder of Pol Pot’s brutal regime clouds the minds of visitors to an ossuary in Ba Chuc, Tri Ton in the province of An Giang ( Land of the Quiet River), southern Vietnam. On April 30, 1977, Pol Pot’s troops launched a surprise attack on 13 villages in eight Vietnamese border provinces. Ba Chuc was the hardest hit. His troops in all massacred 3,157 villagers, including babies. The skulls of 1,159 people peer through glass windows of the ossuary in Ba Chuc, graded by age (from 3 years old) and gender, and denied decent Buddhist cremation. The attack on Ba Chuc was one of the events that prompted the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia later that year
