LIFE ON WATER. A woman steers her ‘houseboat ’away from a cluster of water hyacinth in the Preak Toal Biosphere Reserve of Tonle Sap, Cambodia’s pulsing heart. Three million people live directly off the lake, which provides 70 percent of the country's protein intake. It is an area of extraordinarily rich biodiversity and a key breeding ground for fish. But the lake faces serious threats. In addition to over-fishing,farmers and developers have taken advantage of weak governance to seize and drain land in the flooded forest, destroying key wildlife habitats and polluting the lake. With the backing of the Cambodian government, the Asian Development Bank-financed Tonle Sap Environmental Management Project (TSEMP) is leading efforts to address these threats.
