Active Duty U.S. Sailors man the USS Constitution, but most dress in uniforms from the mid 1800's for the tours.
This fellow is on active duty in the U.S. Navy assigned to the USS Constitution. Although it was built in 1797, it is still a U.S. Navy ship.
Mom decided to take the tour of the old sailing ship. We had to go down two levels using these very steep steps. She actually did pretty well!
This is one of the smaller cannon that was on the Spar Deck (top level). The Constitution had 44 guns in total.
This ship was built in 1797 and was undefeated in 40 historic battles. She was nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' when cannon balls bouncd off her oak planking during the war of 1812.
Before dry docks, boat hulls had to be repaired by leaning the boat on it's side. This was very dangerous and placed a lot of stress on the hull. The USS Constitution was the first ship that used Dry Dock 1 in Charleston Naval Yard for repairs.
