I'm not sure who this is. (Peter took my Laos Rough guide with him and it's now somewhere in southern Vietnam) but clearly venerated and an impressive monument.
There's something about the Mekong that fascinates me. Possibly as it is so wide (and fast flowing at the moment due to all the rains) and that it travels down through China, Laos, Cambodia and out into the South China Sea in Southern Vietnam. Not many people around - more young monks, clearly visible in their robes.
Built in 1962 with concrete given by the US to build the runway at the airport, this "monster of concrete" (that's how it's described on the board at its base) resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris but called the Victory Gate of Vientiane, and never finished "due to the country's turbulent history".
