Herculaneum. Amphitrite was an ancient marine deity, the consort of Poseidon. They had a son, Triton, and a daughter, Rhode. Amphitrite's offspring also included seals and dolphins.
The amphitheatre in Pompeii was old - 150 years older than the Colosseum in Rome, and it is the oldest still in existence. It was built around 70 BC by the two duumvirs Valgus and Porcius. It was out of date by the 79 AD, because for example it only had to entrances/exits and had no cellars or machinery under the arena. It could probably hold around 20,000 people.
Family tomb of the Istacidii, owners of the House of Mysteries.
An old temple in the oldest part of town. Some fragments date from 550BC, when this was the main temple of the city. Most of what is visible - the tufo colonnade and the temple - dates from the 2nd C BC (much of the city was rebuilt at this time). This too was destroyed in the earthquake of 62 and had not been rebuilt by 79.
The focal point of the old town was surrounded by monumental buildings in the second century BC. In the imperial age, it was repaved, the colonnade rebuilt in white limestone, and a couple more buildings added.

Pliny the Younger described the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD as being in the shape of a stone pine: "I cannot give you a more exact description of its appearance than by comparing to a stone pine tree; for it shot up to a great height in the form of a tall trunk, which spread out at the top as though into branches."
