To email, Kate has to go out between where they burn the trash and the outhouse, set her computer on some rusty metal slats, then hang her cellphone in a sock from a peg at the top of a pole, hoping it's high enough to catch a signal, then connect her computer through bluetooth to her cellphone, channeling the internet through the cellphone to her computer. As you can imagine, it's not very reliable, and after dusk the mosquitoes are unbearable!
