Houa Phanh Province gets only the most determined travellers passing through, as the going is slow and the delays common. Hua Phan rivals Phongsali for the title of Laos' most remote province. Nevertheless the few who travel through find it a very rewarding part of the country -- certainly one of the least-touristic parts of Laos. This (see photo) is the Nam Xoi immigration/customs border checkpoint (Laos) opened to international travellers in April 2004. You will approach this checkpoint after passing through Na Meo border checkpoint (Na Meo is a commune in the Quan Son highland district of Vietnam's Thanh Hoa Province), about 200 metres away.. Crossing is straightforward with thorough pack inspections at both posts.
