  I guess i'm getting on a bit now but I still don't feel like a grown up. As I've got older I guess i'm getting to know what i'm like, impatient, forever planning the next thing. I love the natural world and increasingly am put off by cities. I love the story of a place, the history, the imprint of the past the make believe. I have two kids and put a lot of energy into their young lives being a series of wonderful adventures big and small.

• Hobbies:

  A few years ago I would have said climbing and mountaineering. Now I would be a fake if I said that. I guess my hobby is planning the next thing to do whether it is a journey by bikes with a picnic. A trip into the woods to make dens or a round the world adventure with my family.

• Favourite places:

  Hmm...well do you know when ever I come back from being away somewhere, I drive back into the lake district and there is a particular spot along the A 590 where the mountains come into view and I think 'I live here!' But if I had to say somewhere else, Utah up the top of one of those massive bits of rock, and, as touristy as it is, Macchu picchu.
