The Best Areas to Stay in Auckland for Any Budget

Wondering which neighbourhood is best for you? Read on ...

Auckland is a sprawling city with numerous suburbs that you could stay in. Many people assume that the best place to stay is in the centre of the city which includes Queen Street and the surrounding area. However, beachside suburbs like Mission Bay, or hipster areas like Ponsonby offer good quality accommodation in interesting surroundings.

Inner suburbs are within 20 minutes of the CBD by public transport and sometimes that distance can even be walked. From Auckland Airport, the Skybus takes 60 minutes to arrive at the CBD. The city centre has direct train routes out west to Swanson, south to Onehunga and Papakura and south east through Panmure to Manukau.

A few options are available in the outer suburbs, particularly motels. A car can be useful outside of the CBD – outside the city centre parking is usually free and, since most public transport between the suburbs requires a trip into and then out from the city centre, a car is usually much quicker. The trip into the city to see things will be a bit longer though, up to an hour if you're staying a long way out. Consider carefully what the public transport options are when you stay in the outer suburbs. It's not ideal to have to drive into the city for the day, since parking can be expensive.

Buses and trains to all the suburbs leave from Britomart and ferries travel back and forth across the harbour to Devonport (12 minutes) on the North Shore, to Waiheke Island (40 minutes) and to the birdwatchers paradise of Tiritiri Matangi Island (75 minutes). Out West

The wild west coast black beaches of Piha, Karekare, Bethell’s and Muriwai are a paradise for surfers but extremely dangerous – so much so that Piha Rescue, a reality TV show about the Piha Surf Life Saving Club, was filmed there from 2001 to 2017. There’s a famous gannet colony at Muriwai and the Oscar-nominated The Piano was filmed at Karekare in 1993. These west coast beaches are about 40km west of the city centre and are not served by public transport. The nearest city suburb is Henderson.
