2026 More Ambleside and Lake Windermere
Woke up to this morning to a drab gray sky. Looks like rain but hopefully later on in the day.
That is the sky!
We had arranged to meet up with the others at the Apple Pie Bakery and Cafe for breakfast at 0900 hrs. Unfortunately, nothing opens before 1000 hrs. They will do takeaways but not dine ins. Go figure! So we just walked around and here are some shots of the town of Ambleside. We also returned to the MacLivers accommodation which was very nice. Top floor apartment which also means 3 flights of stairs to haul the luggage.

the sun came out for a few minutes and I was lucky enough to capture it. Brings back all those memories of my time living and working in the north of England. If one was on call over the weekend, you will not see the sun for a full 12 days. That was really depressing.

The MacLivers accommodation above a cafe. A lot of the shops seem to have converted their upstairs to accommodation for the tourists. I reckon they probably make more money
We were going to go on a lake cruise but as the forecast was for rain this afternoon, we decided to do that tomorrow. Nonetheless we decided to walk to the jetty to check out the tickets for the lake cruise. Along the way, we came across a site of an old roman fort. It was just a open field with very little excavation so we all had to rely on our fervid imagination to picture the fort. Got to take your hat off to the romans. March all day and then build a fortified camp. They were brilliant engineers - they built roads in order to deploy their legions quickly. Commerce and transport were just nice side effects.

After sorting out the tickets for the Lake cruise, we drove to the town of Windermere. this took us on a long windy road which ended up at the jetty. The ferry took us across for 14.80 pound. Not cheap but beats driving for 45 mins around the lake. It must have been a chain ferry much like the ferry at Sandbanks Dorset.
Windermere
Windermere is just a bigger version of Ambleside. Busier but with the same shops and eateries. Lots of pubs too. It started to rain so we hopped into a cafe for a light lunch of soup and sandwiches. Just the trick to keep warm as the temperature was dropping. Not much more to say about Windermere except I bought a raincoat which will definitely come in handy. Debbie bought some gloves and the MacLivers got some waterproof trousers. Sounds like we are being kitted out for Noah's ark!

We went home for a much needed nap. 60 mins and we were both ready to go again.

We met up with the others at an Italian Restaurant called Dodds - go figure. Nonetheless the food was very good and I especially like the Old Man's Brew which is a bitter. It was a very pleasant evening but everyone was now quite tired and we all called it a day. Tomorrow is another day in Paradise.
