Community Highlights Europe Cappadocia

This is a fascinating place. We first visited the monastic valley of Goreme. The soft volcanic tufa was dug out to make residences, storage and churches beginning about 300 AD.

The churches are painted with frescoes which are still brilliantly coloured after all the time that has passed since they were made. Photography is not allowed inside so I encourage you to google “Goreme churches” to see for yourself.

Then we were taken to a rug factory and had a lecture/sales presentation which was actually quite informative. I fell in love with a tiny “Tree of Life” carpet but could not afford it.

Finally we went to an underground city which was probably more a storage facility than a dwelling.

On the way back to the hotel we stopped for some pics of the valleys from above.
