Early photos of SANTORINI and a DAY TOUR on Tuesday 6th May.
We hesitated about including Santorini in our Greek island itinerary due to the larger crowds and higher prices. However, I couldn’t resist the chance to capture that iconic postcard shot of the blue-domed churches nestled among Santorini’s tightly packed, cascading white buildings so a ferry trip to the island was definitely on. Yes, the extra crowds and elevated prices were immediately noticeable. But just maybe… that special photo was captured after all?
What a stunning setting, a semi submerged caldera jutting aggressively out of the ink blue Agean Sea!

SANTORINI is the most iconic of Mediterranean Greek Islands. The island itself is shaped like a crescent moon, with steep cliffs that drop straight into the Agean sea. Perched right on top of the cliffs are the whitewashed villages, Oia and Fira are two of the largest and appear in the distance like clusters of sugar cubes laying on the ground with the blue domes of churches sprinkled in their midst. The white buildings almost look like they’re tumbling down the hillsides and everywhere you turn there’s another postcard-worthy view. 🏔️🏜️
You can see fresh layers of red, black, and brown volcanic rocks in the cliffs from recent volcanic eruptions, the entire caldera was shaped by an eruption from around 3000 years ago! And then there are the sunsets—people really do stop what they’re doing just to watch them. We read that the “whole sky turns pink and gold, and the light on the cliffs is just magic” but in the few days we were here the sunsets were a little less spectacular.

Next, photos from the sunset on Sunday evening on the day of our arrival. Then some shots of Fira following our first exploration around where we were staying. Fira which is possibly the ‘go to’ spot for many tourists on Santorini.
On Tuesday the 6th we did a day tour around the island that concluded with a classic sunset viewing at Oia on the North Western tip of the island. Oia is famous for its sunsets (not as good as Fannie Bay!) and for its iconic Santorini photos with blue church rooves.
