I've bought plenty of stuff from B&H. They aren't the friendliest or most helpful but if you know what you want they have good prices and are very reliable. I've been to their store twice (its amazing...they have everything there). My purchases have been mailorder. Adorama is another realiable place to buy from in NYC (I've also used them). Both advertise in the back of most USA based photo magazines.

I just bought a digital slr at B and H and found it to be the best price. Also, they have a great used department upstairs. The sales people, especially in the used section, are very knowledgable and helpful. Try to avoid going on a Friday afternoon (they close early and are closed Saturdays too, or Sunday, because they are excessively busy. Just to plug the used department again, they rate each piece 1-10, and even have factory models for much less than full price.

I very recently bought two digital cameras in New York. I had previously mail ordered from Adorama and had that as my #1 choice this time too. I visited both Adorama and B&H but ended up buying from Adorama since the service was quicker (albeit not friendlier, which I suppose is their "thing", being unfriendly) and they had the black Canon Rebel XT kit in stock, which B&H didn't have. The prices were exactly the same for the cameras in both stores.

Note that when buying cameras in the US, they don't come with international warranty. B&H and Adorama offer extended warranties from Mack, which I ended up purchasing. The price depends on the price of the camera.

And yes, I too think B&H is amazing and definitely worth a visit. Made me want to buy all kinds of stuff I didn't realise I needed, though. I'm glad my wife has a tight grip on my wallet. ;)
