Hey there,

Anyone out there do any camping in Italy? We camped there several years back, but it was terribly hard to find a ''normal'' campsite, so to speak (found only one). I'm from Vancouver and spent my youth camping and RVing around BC (so under trees and with bears)...the campsites in Italy are all like small amusement centers and beeping golf-carts and things (frightening). We're thinking of going down there again perhaps (it's closest to us), but I would like to see if I can find something a bit more like camping and less like a resort… Any tips or websites? Also, does anyone know if wild camping is allowed? I think it isn't, but in some places I know people do it anyway…so am curious for any experiences!

Thanks a lot,

Hi Kat

Camped in italy a few years back and managed to avoid the mini theme parks but was only the one trip. I guess its the same as in France and Switzerland where the popular areas tend to have the kind of sites we try to avoid! I know i prefer a field on the edge of the woods somewhere - they're cheaper too.

I've recently looked for a possible trip to the Italian Alps and there are several small basic out of the way type sites - it was Courmayeur I was looking at - but I'm sure they have them all over. Just a case of looking on the internet. I found that village/community websites often have better info than the main booking engines. Pretty sure wild camping isn't officially allowed but people do it esp. in the mountain areas. I don't think the rule is enforced so much as in say Austria or Switzerland but never done it myself. Hope you have a good trip.
