Have you sorted your tax file number out? I'm not sure whether to look into it now or when I arrive in oz!?! Same goes for an oz bank account?!

You can only get a Tax File Number after arriving in Australia. Once you have arrived, here's what you need to know.

Bank account can be done either before (for some banks), or after. If you do it before, your bank card can be there waiting for you at a bank office when you arrive. Personally I did it after, though; super easy - just walk into any bank branch with your passport and AUD $50 for an initial deposit, tell them to send your debit card to your hostel, and to not send you any bank statements, and you'll be good to go a few days later once your card has arrived. As a backpacker, it doesn't matter much which bank you go with; ANZ, CommonWealth and NAB are all pretty big, with ATMs wherever you go. (If you can plan your ATM withdrawals carefully, you sometimes can get a completely free account with limited withdrawals per month - which banks offer such a thing varies from year to year.) I'd personally avoid WestPac, as they used to astroturf this forum (we hates spammers).

Wow. Landing 2days after me :) yea I'm getting nervous now. Mainly about flying alone I think.
Have you sorted you oz bank account n tax number out? I don't think they issue you with your tax number until you get in the country, so I might wait.
Where are you planning on looking for work?

Hey Sian
2 days that's crazy :) yeh the long flights alone are pretty daunting. where are you staying in Melbourne?
I applied for a bank account on NAB's website and they emailed me my ac number and sort code so all I have to do when I get there is show them my passport to get a card but I'm pretty sure it's just as easy to do it when you get there! I haven't got a tax file number I've heard that's easier to get when you get out there.
I've been looking on seek and gumtree for work I bet a few more things will come up as the Christmas season kicks in. I'm not bothered about what I do as long as it's work! How about you have you been looking at any jobs?
