When you get to Oz go into any Medicare centre, flash your passport, fill out a form and they send you a medicare card. This gets you free treatment when it's urgently needed. You have to pay for dentists and doctors appointments etc... but if you fall off uluru and lose a limb on the way down they should patch you up for nowt. It's a bit more detailed than this but you get the general idea.

All the best,

Further on that, you should actually be able to get some money off doctor's appointments as well. Look for 'Bulk Billing' medical practices and they should be able to give a discount or even let you have it free (usually a case of taking receipts to the local Medicare office).

It's definitely a very good idea to sign up when you get here.
