Travel Forums North America Dress Code for American bars and clubs

I will be going to America for several months in June, im just curious what the dress code is for bars and nightclubs. In England, you can get away with a pair of jeans and trainers in a lot of places.

Also, does dress code differ depending on which part of the country you go to? (I will be seeing the West coast, East coast, New Orleans, Memphis, Texas etc..)

Many Thanks,

It varies from club to club. Some have no dress code. Some prohibits jeans, tennis shoes, and t-shirts. What types of clubs are you look at?

Hi Ryan,

Being male, you will have an easier time with the dress codes. For men, most can get away with jeans as long as the shirt is appropriate for the establishment (t-shirt vs button). You can "dress up" or "dress down" a good pair of jeans. It will not hurt to have 1-2 pairs of dressier pants, for those times you may want to splurge on a "more elegant" dinner and such.

There are differences from coast to coast, but again, men are not as constrained in their dress as women. You should be able to do just fine in all areas with the basics. Depending on where you will be staying during your travels, it is always helpful to inquire about local clubs. Check with hotel staff or, if frequenting hostels, others who have been there for a few days. If you are not sure of something - ask. There is an advantage to being a visitor to this country - quite a few places are willing to overlook "dress code violations" if they know you are touring the country. Just use comon sense and you will have no problems with dress codes.

I'm still confused about the precise definition of "trainers", but if you mean "casual shoes" you should be fine - although if you mean "running shoes" they may not let you in, depending on where you're going.

Yep, it is as varied at the place...some places all you need is a pulse to enter (and sometimes I don't even think THAT is necessary) and in others you need to be dressed to the nines;)

In places like South Beach, New York City or LA, yes...the nicer clubs do have a dress code. Some clubs dont allow jeans at all, sneakers will definitely be a no-no. You can call ahead of time to find out if they have a dress code but if you stay away from the fancier places, you wont have a problem at all. Also remember that the nicer clubs also have a cover charge of around $20 to get in and the drinks are a fortune. But there are always plenty of nice places and clubs where the dress code isnt as strict and the cover can be $5-10 to get in.

When you're in Memphis, make sure you visit a club called "Space." They have a good beer sample plate (like five or six small drinks). Really good! Also, ask about Rendezvous, the best BBQ in town. Jeans and a nice shirt, and you're fine!

Bring some basic dress pants, like A Night at the Roxbury. Most places won't let you in in jeans. If you can't find them in your own country, don't worry. You'll find them in the United States!
