I did it the other direction and entered China from Vietnam. I got both the Chinese and Vietnamese visas before I left the home (just got them through their embassies, much easier than getting them in foriegn countries). Crossed at Hekou, Vietnam (you cross a bridge into Yunnan, China) then I took a train to kunming.

I did it last summer from China to Vietnam. I got the visa from the Vietnamese consulate in Guangzhou, it cost me 350 RMB, done in 3 days. They have a one day express which costs 600 RMB.
There is a new consulate in Nanning now. It would be probably more convenient for you 'cause if you take the frequented way you will pass by Nanning.
I took a train to the border town Pinxiang from Nanning, walked across the border and took a cab to Hanoi. It is the cheapest way and will be better if you can find someone to share the cab.
Be sure to write down the EXACT day when applying for the visa. they wont let you go in before the day the visa is due.

You can arrange a Vietnamese visa in Kunming and catch an express bus down to Hekou
