This will depend greatly on where you are travelling. In large parts of North America hostels will also be hard to come by, and especially because you are travelling with someone, you might find that double rooms are cheaper or nearly as cheap as two beds in a hostel dorm.

If I am curious about pricing somewhere for accommodation, I usually do a search for that type of accommodation using one of the forms that can be found through the ACCOMMODATION tab at the top of the page. Then I sort by price and usually pick something halfway down the page to give me a rough idea on an average price. It's not always foolproof but it's pretty decent :)

Yes, price will vary greatly from region to region. Hotels are so expensive, even in the "suburbs", but unfortunately, hostels can be hard to come by. I can post some suggestions for the big cities, i just have to go through my notes...I can also suggest some New ENgland options, if you are planning to go there. And Nova can try this web site, if you haven't already

you might want to consider camping some of the time....

but Sam I Am gives good advice about searching accomodation pages...hostels are not necessarily always the best choices....

are you really traveling through all of NA? Because in Mexico you can stay in some beautiful spots for very little money.

have fun

You might also want to check wit getting a YHA membership. Usually the non-HI or YHA hostel in town is less expensive per night, though. But not always. Hostel prices here range from 20 to 30 dollars Canadian per night for one person, though sometimes there are member perks like free internet or food (particularly at the HI Hostel in Calgary). You can buy the membership (cheaper, I think) at the hostel locally than overseas- if you can even get the Canadian one overseas? It depends what you want, however .
