Shanghai is a real modern city with tall and beautiful buildings and has many foreign companies. However inspite of cosmopolitan nature, it is really surprising that you cannot find writings in english even on the important roads or buildings.Everything is in Chinese, except names of railway stations and metros. You always need some chinese to accompany you to explain about a place or about anything. It is high time that the local government should come out with more use of english in shanghai.

It is absolutely necessary that you should have an english speaking guide when you are in China--even in shnaghai.

I guess you haven't been to shanghai. Please don't believe or judge something easily. "Seeing is believing." anyway...welcome to china, welcome to shanghai, and you will find and feel what real china is.

I grew up in Shanghai, lived there until I was 11. I agreed with you regarding safety issue, Jessie (reread my post). I was just contrasting your view of safety issues in China against the view of my relatives.

Nowhere is safe enough. I even saw a stealing in Singapore which quite surprised me.

Citybell, agree with you! That is what China urgently need to improve if we want to attract more tourists. Beijing`s gonna hold the Olympic Games soon, and I can almost imagine the complains by then.
