Hi Everyone :)

I am going to Australia on a Working Holiday Visa in 4 Months and was wondering if anyone could help me out with previous experiences with money?

I am going to have around 8000AUD and was wondering if that will get me though a few weeks untill I find work?

I am not a smoker but I do like to go out and drink, i will be with my partner and we will be staying in hostels and eating as cheaply as possible and will work on a farm or any type of job to get us money to travel from one place to another.

Has anyone got any stories on how much they took/spent and the activites they done on that money, it would be a great help to me!

Thanks guys, i hope to hear from you all ! :)

Hey there!

You can survive on little if you have to! I think 8k AUD is plenty to get you through until you find work, assuming you spend wisely. A night out at the bar can cost you $20 on the low end (2 drinks), $50 on average, a few drinks, maybe a bit of food, and $100 for many.

I came to Australia with $500 cash and made it last for five months! (I was doing work exchanges on farms - -snip-.)

(nb: I had more than $500 to my name... that's just what I brought in cash)

Eating cheaply means cooking for yourself, for the most part. Even a simple sandwich can be $15-20.

Hope that helps a bit! Sorry, no activity info :(

I reckon that'll be more than enough as long as you're careful with accommodation and eating etc. I'm guessing your partner will have a similar amount?

I found eating and drinking out VERY expensive - I was there for a month and took around £2000 spending money which all went! I do like a drink though. However, that did pay for decent accommodation (not hostels), car hire for the whole trip, and a couple of excursions. We flew into Sydney, had a few days there, flew up to Cairns then drove back down to Sydney over the time. It was a bit ambitious distance-wise!!

We had a tour to the Daintree rainforest - that cost a couple of hundred each from what I recall however it was absolutely worth it (in my opinion) and we had the money to do it. It would be possible to do that kind of trip yourself, book cheaper accommodation etc. In fact we loved it so much ended up going back to Mossman Gorge once we'd hired a car.

Also did a tour to the Jenolan Caves north of Sydney, also expensive if I recall.

I'm off on a WHV soon, and have a similar amount of money to the amount you are taking. I'm planning to take it VERY easy those first few weeks until I know I've got another income coming in! I'm hoping to get works as soon as possible so I can keep a chunk of that money aside for doing the activities, scuba diving on the Barrier Reef etc. Then whatever I earn in whatever job I find can be my day to day spending money. That's the plan anyway

I'm going to try and take an 'emergency' credit card although haven't applied for one yet. Or if that fails will keep some aside in a separate account.

Good luck!
