Hello everyone!
I'm currently going through a bad patch in my life! I'm 26 and just split from long term girlfriend had to move back in with parents!!!
Been thinking about going travelling to Oz but all of my friends are all settled down with kids and houses! So would be going on my own! I've herd so many story's that you need so much money to go out on your own etc? And that once your there it's hard to find work aswell! But also been told that there is plenty of work!? So confused! Ide really like some advise on the whole travelling solo and where to start..... also maybe if anyone needs a buddy! I'm from Portsmouth and looking to go end of Jan 2016!
australier! on my own!!!!!!
Hi there.
Save as much money as you possibly can, simply because the more you have the easier life will be as you settle in.
Nights out are relatively expensive compared with many other countries e.g. a pint of beer in Perth is generally AU$8-12 (£4-5)...so if you don't have lots of money you may want to wait till you have a job before getting stuck into the social scene.
As for work availability I think it depends on effort and attitude. Many people that find it hard to get work don't put in as much effort into looking as they could and don't stay positive about finding work. Gumtree is a useful resource for finding work. There is always work available but you will always be competing with many other travellers, so it is important to increase your chances by having a great CV and presenting yourself well. Don't just dump your CV and wait for a call...have a chat to business owners and be proactive about following up with phone calls etc. Put in effort and stay positive and good things will happen.
If you really want to make the trip happen then it will...and it will probably become the best thing you could have done!
If you need other advice about travelling solo etc, be sure to ask specific questions (and don't forget to check out other threads because there is tonnes of helpful advice already on travellerspoint).
Hey buddy,
Looks like you and I have the same back story down to an absolute tee! I'm also looking at going at he end of Jan!
The main reason I wanna go is to get back some perspective on my life and to throw myself into the unknown after years of complacency in a long-term relationship, sound familiar? Like you say all my friends are in realtionships and looking at settling down and I find myself as a bit of a spare wheel at the moment. So why not do a bit of travelling hey?
So whats your plans man. Where do you wanna start?
The initial thought of travelling alone is scary but once you do it it naturally all falls into place. I travelled south east Asia for six months and have been living in Sydney for 3 months! If you get to Sydney be sure to message me.. I am always up for meeting new people and making new friends!
I landed myself a job wth the same company I worked for in the UK, it took me a while but I was very lazy as I kept putting work off as much as I could! Everyone says how stupidly expensive it is here but it came be as expensive or as cheap as you make it! As the guy said nights out are very very expensive, x
Hey everyone,
I'm moving to Oz solo on April 7th (pretty much identical story as above) and it would be awesome to have some people to hang out with I will be starting off in Sydney and staying with family for the first couple of weeks but after that I'm super keen to move on and travel around/do farming work and meet loads of people!
Look forward to catching up with people
Hey buddy,
don't worry about the money too much. I've met a couple who came landed with $500 usd between the two of them and they've done just fine. It will be easier if you have a bit more of a cushion (and definitely save emergency money for at least the ticket home). From my experience so far, in Australian hospitality it's hard to find reliable Australian workers. Too many no call no shows, frequent sick day leaves, etc. It's a cultural thing I guess? SO, your competition is not that strong. You just have to bring in your best game.
Also, note where will be high traffic during each season. People here travel allot depending on the weather. On the pie graph of Australian GDP, service industries (driven by tourism) looks like Pac Man. You can also do labor jobs once you have obtained a white card.
-snip-
always remember, when there is a will, there is a way! Now travel on!!!!
