My name is Karen. I'm 27 and I'm from Ireland. I am coming to Australia on 5th of August for one month and I hope to travel up the east coast to Cairns from Sydney. I am a solo traveller and I'm wondering what the best way is to do this trip? I have looked at the oz experience which appeals to me but I'm worried from reading other forums etc. that that group will consist mainly of 18 year olds who will be out drinking every night. Don't get me wrong, I love a fun night out but would prefer to be on a trip with people around my own age, or older.

I would love some advice regarding the east coast trip for a solo traveller who wants to meet others along the way!

Thank you:)

Oz Experience no longer really exists as a separate thing. It's now fully owned and operated by Greyhound, using regular Greyhound busses, with the "oz experience" name solely being used for the "all inclusive" package/pass for travelling with them.

When it did still exist, I'd recommend to just travel independently with Greyhound (and/or other bus companies, train or (rental) car), and just meeting up with fellow travellers in the hostel you'll stay at.

Thanks for your reply! I have been doing a bit more research and see there is an alternative tour with Loka travel. Do you know anything about this tour?

Thanks again.

Hi Karen,

I'm looking to do a similar trip, but in December/ January.
I too had concerns about Oz experience and other similar tours. I'm also 27 and don't really want to spend my entire trip with drunken 18 year olds, not that I'm opposed to a couple of drinks.
I am considering booking a tour with Top Deck, have you check out their site and their tours?

Hope you manage to find something that works best for you!

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for you reply! I have come across top deck, but I'm finding it difficult to get recent reviews. Have you found this?

I have been doing a lot of searching and have come across this:

I like that it's a little longer than some of the 14-16 day trips as I have a full month.

I will keep posting anything I find and likewise if you come across anything please let me know :)

Happy planning!

I find in most countries (and I live in Oz) that it's best to arrive at your pre-booked backpacker hostel then look for advice & group tours recommended there. In your case - prebook one of the hostels in Manly (a beautiful ferry ride to the beaches north of the Sydney CBD) and work it out there while enjoying the area & its many charms. My daughter a few years ago went on a semi-organised trip from Sydney to Cairns including 4-wheel driving on Frazer Island & bare boat yachting in the Whitsundays, stopping at most of the highlights and it was much cheaper than the glossy brochure equivalents. Enjoy

Hey Karen, I know this is an old thread but just doing some research on a solo trip from Sydney to Cairns and came across this and said I'd hit you up. 27 year old Irish guy with no plan other than booking into a hostel in Sydney and hoping to play it by year - how did your trip go in the end? Did you go with one of the tours or just meet people on route? Any nuggets of advice would be super! Thanks a mil, Gary ✌🏻
