Help - Xmas In Oz

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Help - Xmas In Oz

I'm a bit worried. I'm going to Oz (flying into Sydney) in November. I'm doing either Oz Intro or Ultimate Oz for my first week and will then probably stay in hostels and travel for a bit. I'm a bit worried though what to do for Xmas/NYE. Will I be able to even find anywhere to stay? I can't really book anywhere yet for Xmas/NYE as I don't know anyone and don't know who I'll meet out there etc. Ideally I wanted to stay in Sydney until January and then travel up the coast.

Personally I think you're putting way too much important on getting to "know" people.
Wherever you'll stay at, that's where you'll be meeting and getting to know people. Backpacker friendships tend to be extremely easy to set up, and extremely swift to be abandoned. Just make plans for yourself, count on it being easy enough to get all the social contact you desire, and stay far away from relying on others for your what you want to do.

For NYE in Sydney, you definitely want to be booking accommodation in the next month or two. If you wait till August, all the decent places will be long gone. If you wait till November, you'll be left with places way out of town, or costing you boatloads of money.
(Christmas isn't nearly as bad, and of course you can always opt to just celebrate NYE somewhere else. But if you're set on NYE in Sydney, then booking way ahead is the thing to do.)

Depending on your pace, I'd also recommend against travelling north from Sydney in January. It'll be the middle of the wet season, and decidedly unpleasant once you reach Brisbane and above.

Thanks for your advice. Does anyone have any recommendations on good hostels or places to stay in Sydney for NYE? I'll get booking it now! Somewhere where I can see the fireworks etc and near the centre would be good.
