Hi,

Me and a friend are going to Patagonia, starting in the south at Ushuaia. From here on we want to hit al the highlights up north towards Bariloche. This will take is from 3DEC - 17 DEC.

We are looking for a pair that wants to do the roadtrip, rent a car/camper with sleeping space on top of the car and drives down south. This means:
- couple does the route, the other way around
- advantage: no drop-off costs for both of us.
- flexibility and speed to locations
- pick-up in or around bariloche.
- drop-off in Ushuaia

Curious if people share my plan :D! Looking forward to hearing from you,

Regards,
Robin Madlener

Out of curiosity, have you checked that the car rental company would allow something like this? How do they handle potential insurance claims for example? Whose name is on the contract?

Hi Peter,

I have checked it partly. Namely, the option to add a second driver (friend of mine) whom is joining later, but wherefor I need his papers as well. This will be copies, because he needs them while travelling.

In line with this thought, the drop-off would be done by my friend.
However, considering this structure, the same would be possible for an extra 2 persons, implying the advantage of planning a bigger journey by car.

My suggestion ito insurance; this holds for the moment self, covers the damage on that moment (in case there is). This can be handled by the driver self.
Secondly, when "handing-over" the car from us to the next pair, then a good audit and a sense of trust is imperative.
Finally, what would make sense to me is; my name can be on the contract, under the condition that the driver is always responsible for his actions. To prevent discussions afterwards.

Are you interested or just asking out of curiosoty? :)

Regards,
Robin

If there is a dispute, it is an Argentinian Court that will decide on the validity of your arrangement and who is responsible for what.

Perhaps you should get a copy of the Standard contract from the rental company first and see what is in there. They are unlikely to change their standard contract for 1 rental. In addition to the legal risks, changing the contact doesn't make any sense from a purely business point of view -> They loose the one-way fee premium.

If things go bad and the car get totaled, your one-way saving would disappear.

I was just asking out of interest. That level of trust you are placing in the second person is huge. Considering they are the ones who have to turn up at the rental company and have it inspected. My experience with car rental companies is they will try to find anything they can that's wrong. If at the start you didn't note a scratch on the car and then at the end the car rental company points out the scratch, they will try to make you pay for it. Now you're leaving it to a stranger to dispute this scratch.

I also wonder if they will even allow someone other than the main person to return the car. It seems like they might have some real issues with it.

Personally, I'd not take the risk.

On a side note on rental insurance --- the best way to save big there, is by ensuring you have a travel insurance that covers the excess charged by rental companies. Even if it means a slightly more pricey travel insurance, it will be MUCH cheaper than paying for the excess coverage that rental companies charge.

It seems like you've got an awesome trip ahead of you! I'm just a little jealous as well :)
