Hello, my name's Don. I'm an American living in Frankfurt am Main, Land Hessen, Germany, where I teach, ride a bicycle and go to the opera.

For over a dozen years I was an active member of virtualtourist.com, a site which is currently being dismantled. I look forward to meeting some of my old VirtualTourist friends here on Travellerspoint, and of course meeting lots of new (to me) travellers here.

Greetings all, yet another VT Refugee. :) I am an American living in.... America! I'm in the Atlanta, Georgia area and hope that this will be a great place to post travel memories, tips, meet new and old friends!

Hi all, another VT refugee here ;)
This looks like a nice place with nice people so it will be great to meet new friends and keep contact with the old ones. I hope the avalanche of new people does not cause much disruption.
Greetings from sunny Barcelona!

I have added you all as friends and have requested to make a VT refugees group. I am now waiting for it to be approved and then we can discuss what our next move is. The first obvious difference I see is that here you can only blog and not make pages with tips on specific locations. Any suggestions as to how we can "recreate" our beloved VT format somehow?

Could you link to example of how VT does things? At first blush, I'd say our travel guide (which is a wiki) will come closest to offering that functionality. Find the destination you want to write a tip about, and either put it within that page itself (if it's just a few lines), or create a new guide page specifically for it, which you link to from the destination.

You might run into some limitations with permissions since you're a newly registered member, but those should evaporate relatively swiftly once you become active, and I'd be happy to spend some effort in helping out with anything you don't yet have permissions for.

Thanks for the encouragement Sander. Yes, the travel guides could offer options for those of us who want to carry on sharing tips etc. I'm also keen to start a blog here - something I've been thinking of for a while anyway.

I was interested to see a mention of photo competitions here but they don't seem to be current. That would really interest me :) Do you know if there are any plans to revive them?

Quoting ToonSarah

I don't know, sadly. I think running a lot of those activities were very labour intensive on the side of the TP staff, so focus shifted away from them a while ago. But they certainly were popular (I still treasure the calendar I have with the winners from the very first yearly photo competition), and I can imagine they're high up on staff's wishlist for activities to revive.

All of this is supposition by looking in from the outside, though. I really don't know anything about current plans or focus. Hopefully when Peter wakes up in a couple of hours, and sees all the activity, he'll share some thoughts. :)

Hi, another refugee from Virtualtourist.

I am Ali and live in the Netherlands.
Yes I love travelling the world and writing reports about my travels like I did for 12 years at VT.
And I like to meet fellow travellers.

Oh, btw, ToonSarah, I saw on VT that you were hoping the group request for VT refugees would be approved soon since I'm active. Sadly approving travel groups is admin functionality, not something I as a moderator can do, so you'll have to wait for Australia to wake up before action is taken there.
