I'm so sad virtual tourist went away but I don't want to loss touch with the amazing people I met there. Like you I spent countless hours building a travel page and uploading pics I don't want to go backwards and rebuild from the past but just look to the current and future. I look forward to keeping in touch with some of the amazing people I met there and meeting more. So lets keep in touch and safe travels.

I'm also from VT. Don't think we encountered each other on there, but nice to find a fellow exile on here.

So happy this forum will be filling the large void.

While I enjoy TripAdvisor, it seems more oriented toward promoting their travel affiliates.
I mean, I understand the profit motive (I own my own company) but, I always felt suggestions on VT were unencumbered

Quoting katzgar

too many fake reviews on TA

That is why Virtual Tourist was SO different and SO much better..
It was set up to build a community of travellers who got to know and trust each other - and the Reviews - they published through their Travel Pages.
I joined VT as a refugee from TA when I realised how many of the reviews I saw there were either from the owners of a facility or from their friends and relatives .
OR from ex-employees with a grievance, and local competitors.
Some well publicised information in the National Press , on TV and Court cases confirmed this .
As a community VT members have been quick to identify "reviews" and "Tips" of that kind posted by newly signed up members, and the built in reporting system on VT ensured they were quickly removed.
There can never be another like it.

Hi from another ex VTer :)

I quite agree about TA, and always trusted the VT reviews much more. While we don't have reviews on this site as we knew them there, I'm enjoying trying something a bit different and getting to grips with blogging.

I'm starting to get the hang of how to use the blogs on here, but still trying to find my way round some other aspects of the site. Overall happy to have somewhere else to post stuff now that vt will sadly go.

Hello Irene
I am still finding my way around here but think it could be the best alternative to that of which we have been robbed.
Hope you are following G's Thread about preserving our pages.

I notice the thread has been inactive for some time and it's suggested any additions should be kept to something 'awesome'. Well, I'm just in the process of shifting here from the late-lamented VT (as of the next few days) and just wanted to say I look forward to learning my way around here and maybe contributing something useful in future. Not sure if that's 'awesome', but I'm excited. :)

YET another VT refugee
I really enjoyed contributing, learning and enjoying VT. It looks like many of us would migrate here so that a sense of our old community might be maintained.
I am so glad that I could import all those thousands of photos and reviews. Now I have to find where they are !
Best wishes to every one especially VT refugees

Yehuda
