My friend and I (both girls, just about to turn 19) have travelled together before and know that we are compatible travelling companions; I have travelled alot all my life both with my parents and with friends (I grew up overseas). This has made us oh so very, very aware of how vulnerable we can be, yet we have merrily planned a four month trip around South America! To get this forum off to a bit more of a start, I was wondering if anyone out there could give me any tips about having a fantastic time (which I'm sure we'll manage!) and somehow not getting all of our clothes nicked on the first hour in the airport! Also, minus the horrific rape stories, we'd appreciate the advice of any lone female travellers who could tell us if we should expect too much unwanted hassle... thanks K.
Hi Kirsty,
Great to hear you will be travelling South America. I just got back from Costa Rica myself and it is absolutely fantastic! I met a few young women travelling together which seems to be quite safe in Costa Rica. Heard slightly different stories over Guatemala but of course I wasn't there in person. There were quite a few stories going around about stolen luggage. Most of them at bus terminals...... never take your eyes off your luggage is my tip! Rather lug your backpack an extra 5 mins than putting it down somewhere and leaving it for a second... also watch out when you are sitting on those open benches. Heard from a guy who had his backpack taken from under him! In general, just keep your eyes on your stuff and don't carry too many valuables with you. When going out at night then I wouldn't carry everything along either. Oh, and keep your credit card and regular banking card in different places (one in your backpack, the other in your wallet). If one gets nicked, at least you still have money though I guess with two girls together this is less of a problem.
Have you checked with the different Travel Helpers for South America? There are a few who undoubtedly have great tips!
Cheers and happy travels!
Sam
