"The key thing for VT was that the tips were linked to intro pages, so all tips written by the same member about the same place were easily brought together."

What Sarah said is what made VT for me and all the others special. It's nice to see tips about a place, but for that you could also get yourself a Lonely Planet or the like. What I loved about VT is that it gave writers the possibility to share their own, personal tips. This meant that some of them were not at all in line with one's own travelling style, but it also meant you could discover things new that you would never find in a normal travel guide. I daresay that all my travel tips were somehow personal, and until now I haven't found any means to do something similar - neither here, nor elsewhere. It would be great if an option like that was available on TP, too.

Thats so true! I did bring my stuff in here, but can´t tell yet if I will "feel like home" in here. I am starting my own blog now, but in Finnish this time (maybe I have got more lazy by age :) ), maybe I will write here also, maybe I wont. Time will tell. But I thought it would be no harm of bringing my staff in here just in case, before it´s too late.

Peter and Sander - from the very bottom of my heart - THANK YOU for having made this import possible!!!
Most of my photos transferred smoothly, 300 or so failed to be imported, but I don't mind because I have everything on my computer anyhow.

BTW: I love how our photos look here - a lot better than in VT. I also love the mapping of photos, something I was desperately seeking for in VT. Now I can even make a walk through a city with placemarks/mapping of the various sights :-)

Thank you!!!
:)

PS: an emoticon with a heart is missing :-)

I second all this. Yes, we will all miss VT but there are some things here we will really welcome, such as the much better displaying of photos. And Ingrid, have you seen the monthly photo competition? And that there is a group for keen photographers?

Hi again everyone,

The import seems to have worked overnight - fantastic stuff.

I notice that at the moment the imported photos don't have any particular organisation - there is just a flat list of 9,000 or so of them!

So I am very interested in plans for travel pages and tips further to "I could still import it into a database for you to have access to it beyond the shutdown of VT" at the top of this thread. I know that the import has already populated that database. Can it be exposed in some way? Even if it's just access to the raw database (or via web front-end), that would still be really useful.

I'm a software developer by trade so if there is scope for helping out with this then do let me know.

Sorry to be so demanding!

Cheers,
Mike

I have just checked the progress of my VT import. All the photos are there. There is nothing special about them - they won't win any prizes or "oohs" and "aahs" - but they are part of my travel memories. Thanks to everyone, especially Peter.

Hi Mike, the photos do have the dates from VT attached to them, so when I look in your public photo gallery they are ordered to show the most recent ones first. The order in your "My Photos" page is based on the photo IDs though which is whatever order they came in, which in this case is indeed quite random!

Thanks for the offer of help. I will try to expose the tips / reviews sooner rather than later. Not to the public, but just for you all to access them. I'm first going to work a bit on fixing up the photo organisation functions as there are some very valid requests for improvement there!

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the very quick reply. That's useful to know about the photos already being in date order if I go to the right page! I'll await further updates with keen interest.

Cheers,
Mike

Just read about "exporting content and photos from VT to TP - I understand-
I was simply too quick! Had done it some weeks before by hand. Ok, it was not so much, only so about 200 remarks and photos.
But please let me guide your attention to another problem:
The soon ownerless content if it is staying in VT.
Following the real reasonable advice of another VT-Traveller ("be carful.....") - I removed my content in VT side to nearly zero. This only as remark.
Best regards!

***For those who haven't saved their VT material before shutdown***
https://web.archive.org ("Wayback machine")

Magic Tip:
1. Go to one or more of your current VT pages (profile page or other) and save the URL. Do it now as you may not know it in the future.
2. Go to the above "wayback machine" site and enter your desired VT page address. You'll then be taken to a page that was automatically saved/captured at some point in time. Note that many links, probably all of them in such page also work, that is you'll be taken to more saved/captured pages.
3. In the top portion of the screen you can try a different date (date when such page was saved).

There is a high chance that you will be able to access all of your material even after VT's shutdown.
Hope this helps! I've also posted this in the FB group, please share through other channels if you can.

Peter, thank you for hosting a bunch of desperate VTers :)
