Is there are reason why part way through today I appear to have stopped getting email alerts when someone posts in a forum thread to which I've subscribed? I've spotted new posts in several threads while browsing but have not been notified about them through email. I can't see where I look on the site to see if my preferences have somehow changed, but I do still seem to be subscribed to the threads as I'm offered an "unsubscribe" option!

Same issue, Sarah.

On a related note, is there a way to subscribe to a thread without getting an email notification every time someone posts in it? I can see if someone posts by looking at http://www.travellerspoint.com/my_forumsubscriptions.cfm and also from seeing the forums I've posted in recently on the right. But how do I turn off email notifications?

I have no idea why email notification might've stopped. That will need Peter to have a look at things, and probably restart a service somewhere.

Hmm, so you want a function to "keep track" of a thread, without receiving any notifications for it? Interesting... Sadly we don't really have that functionality. Subscribing here really is the same as getting notifications.

As you mentioned, threads which you've posted in are highlighted on the main forum page regardless of subscription status, and thus almost offer this, but of course, that does require posting in the thread, first.

There is a 'subscribe to this thread box towards the bottom of the tread, When you post a reply or start a new thread, it defaults to 'yes'

Once you have posted, there is a Subscribe or Unsubscribe option to be clicked.

The expression 'subscribe' should read 'subscribe to e mail notifications for this thread?' Or not as the case may be.

I am curious .. what is your understanding of subscribe? What do you expect to happen when you subscribe?

My e notifications can take up to three hours to arrive but I should just unsubscribe since I check the forum regularly & there are the alarms on the right too.

A whole bunch of notices just hit my mailbox so the bug must have been squashed!

Thank you!

Well, what I meant is something like you have on facebook, or like we had on VT. So you get a notification when you log in that someone has commented, but without the dozens of emails to an external email address as well. Does that make sense?

It is debatable I think .. some people want the e mail notification & some not. I liked it for a few times & then I turn it off but now I have changed my mind

TP gives the option to get mail or not .. it gives 'Recently active threads you posted in' & that gets a number beside it even if you no longer subscribe .. Which is what I think you want. So, for you, turn off the subscribe every time you post & you should be ok.

There are also :-
Last 50 threads you posted in .. that is an obvious one
All the threads you're subscribed to -- where you can turn of all or sone notifications.I have turned all mine off today

I have never been a fan of the word Subscribe as I feel there is going to be some cost attached, like cash or spam ... Notifications is a more apt word I think.

Perhaps there should be a place in the sign up settings that gives the option to get mail or not.

Bug definitely squashed - I have a flood of email notifications this morning!

I can see where maykal is coming from, btw. While there are ways to see on TP if there have been comments on threads you're following, it isn't quite as "in your face" when you log on when compared to FB for instance. What I would welcome would be something like the "My messages" alert in the top right. There could be a similar "My forums" link which would have a number indicating unread ones and take you to a list similar to the list of messages - basically a version of the "Recently active threads you posted in" list you get if you got to forums now, but without the need to remember to go to check the forums. Is that do-able?

A notification stream would be a good idea actually. Can be used for a lot more than threads.

Edit: for example to notify you of the people who starred your entries, photos, etc. for example. People won't want an email every time that happens.

I'll add this to my list of things to do :)
