If it wasn't so inept i'd probably laugh.

Although this is basically United's mistake indeed, I really don't understand why you go to the USA if you don't speak English

I'm not going to start a hugely over the top debate here buddy, but surely it's no different from me visiting China without speaking Chinese.
I'd love to hear your reasoning behind that theory.

You are right about that, we don't all speak every language in the world, but certainly some languages would be of importance if you travel to certain places. And although some words might be usefull to say the least (I try it in most languages), personally I think that basic English (when travelling to the USA, not in general) is something I would advice. The fact that she didn't is fine on its own, but the result might be that these things can and do happen. Therefore: the news is that United did something bad again, but there is always a different side of each story, especially on the internet..:)

I'm guessing the woman was coming to stay with family who are bilingual: not unusual. It's especially true of elder parents who come to visit U.S. based offspring - sometimes for months at a time - and especially from Asia. Someone meets them at the airport and they spend all of their time either with family or at home if host family members are at work. Let's just say that I've seen it often enough where I live?

I would have thought it would be a basic requirement to match the flight number on a boarding pass to the number of the flight & the number of passengers boarded to the number of boarding passes .. . but I guess I guess wrong.

Yes, and it was missed twice - first when it was scanned at the gate and secondly when there was the issue with someone in her seat.

I do understand where you are coming from, although i have to say, i don't see it as a pre-requisite, certainly a few words are always useful, and i'm certainly in your camp with trying to learn a few key words myself. However, as you are alluring to, United have royally messed up again, twice having the opportunity to notice this mistake, and for my two pennies worth are completely at blame for this poor lady's unfortunate experience irrespective of her ability (or lack of), to communicate in English.
