Hey everyone,

In the interest of transparency and in the interest of generating feedback, I thought I'd start a thread about what I'm currently working on. After much deliberating of how to incorporate the VT tips into our site, what I came up with in the end is Destination Boards.

The goal:
To allow you to organise your travel content by destination.

In detail:
Boards will allow you to group all your content about one destination easily for others to view. You could then share your "Tokyo" board with anyone who is interested in Tokyo. Boards will be able to contain tips, photos, videos, blog posts and even external links so people who have blogs elsewhere could also use it to organise their stuff. In addition, boards will serve as a way of showing which places you have visited, allowing you to highlight the ones that are the most important to you. People will also be able to follow and comment on boards and board items.

Boards will also become prominent in a new profile page. To give you an idea of what it would look like, have a look at this screengrab of work in progress. The board page itself is not far enough along to show a screengrab, but I'll share when it is :)

At the moment, my plan is for people to manually add boards for places they want to highlight. There might be some "Suggested boards" based on your travels so far, but they will not just automatically populate. The same goes for board items. Suggested additions, but no requirement to include anything. If people don't want to add boards to their profile, they will be able to opt-out and get a profile page more similar to our current one.

In the end, I hope that it will generate a compelling new view of people's activity on the site as well as provide a new way of finding travel information. Since all the content will be grouped by "Place", it will make it easier to search for people's tips/photos/blogs about that place.

Please let me know what you think. :)

I like the idea - it's something I'd use.

As a suggestion, would it be possible to link a board for one destination to boards for other nearby destinations - eg, for the 'Tokyo' board, could there be links to the 'Mt Fuji' board and the 'Hakone' board since they're only a day-trip away and then they could link to the 'Kyoto' board and the 'Osaka' board so that it would be possible to plan a journey easily through the country?
:):):)

Yes definitely. It makes sense. Something like that could be done automatically or manually by the board owner who wants full control.

It sounds a little like what I have already tried to do with various destinations. I have one for the Dominican Republic, for Grand Turk and I've almost finished one for Grenada and I started one for Barbados. (I keep getting interrupted by trips :) )

I have taken the various narratives from VT from the several visits and added in the photos and tip information.

In the case of the DR... , we spent a week in Santo Domingo and then we visited Samana a couple of times by cruise ship and the most recent visit was to Puerto Plata. I see that there is no Overview but all the sections are finished.

Grenada does have an introduction page, but the last three sections are not finished yet.
Is that the kind of thing you mean?

A little yes, but that's a pretty unique use of the blogs. So this would provide some more structure to make it easier to find content like that.

So you would create a Grenada board, then within that board, you could group a bunch of photos, tips, links to blog entries of yours and other content. It does become like your own mini travel guide for that place. It probably could take over the role of that introduction page you created, though there's also no reason you couldn't have both.

I've always been unique;)

I started out in VT using travelogues for Intercoastal Waterway boat trips (on our sailboat) where we would go maybe 50 miles a day and most of the text was about the stuff between the ports. Which when I asked how I could do it, they didn't think I could. But I made it work for me.

So maybe I should hold off on finishing Barbadoes until after you get this organized.

On looking at the Grenada blog, I see that I still have not gotten the chapters to go in the correct order. It skips from the end of the 2013 visit to the second day of the 2015 visit and if I go back to the first day, that takes me back to the beginning and not to the second day.

I'm fond of unique ;)

I don't think there's any harm in continuing as you are. The content won't be lost either way. This is still pretty early in the development stage, so it will be a while before it's done. And most likely you will just be able to add it on top of what you already have created. If you then think there's too much overlap, you can always remove stuff.

ok

I have several things started, and not many finished. And I still have to map the rest of my photos and tips. But I'm not planning on going anywhere until October, so maybe I will finish something.

If I were to do a search for 'Hungary', would the result be any Profiles that have a Hungary Board or a page of just Hungary Boards?

Quoting hasbeen

Probably a combo of a few featured boards, and then the best content from those boards.
