I am from india and i applied for bachelors in fashion in florence, italy. I read in an article that if the stay is more than 90 days i have to attend for the consulate in person for an interview. Is that real? If so, does the interview happens like usa consulate? If not, how the process takes place?

If you re in Northern India you should read though this http://www.vfs-italy.co.in/delhi/visaapplicationprocess.html & follow the steps ..

Or click the 'Jurisdiction to apply" if Northern India does not apply to you.

Best of luck .

Are you currently living in India or the USA?

You will need a student visa to spend more than 90 days in Italy and your school should be able to give you some of the information. Contact Student Services there.

Hello friend,
Visa processes are changed on country wise. You check all of the details & information about visa process in Italy country. Visa officers give a proper info or online check terms & conditions. Follow these rules & submit all of your self-attested documents there. No more issue to take a visa from go to Italy.
Best Of Luck, dear:-)

Normally you would have to enroll on the course at the university and then apply for a student visa, which would cover you for the duration of your studies. The limited 90 day visa sounds more like a tourist visa to me (they're usually about that long) - a student visa will cover you. Best course of action I think is to contact the university in Florence, I'm sure they're used to these procedures :)
