Style sometimes needs to defer to practicality, depending on the trip and length of travel. On some organized tours, you don't have to carry your bags. They are delivered to your room; and in the morning you leave them outside the door and they will be handled for you. So bring whatever you like. No worries.

If you're spending a few days traveling on your own before and/or after the tour, and you have to handle your own bags, then you might want more practicality, unless you're willing to deal with porters and bellmen. A suit or two, used for a night or two, might not be practical. But a shirt and tie, with a sweater or black fleece, might. So stuff a tie or two into his bag for those dressier occasions on tour.

Myself, I prefer taste over style. It suits me more for the kind of travel that I do.

It doesn't really matter (unless you feel uncomfortable), I live in Vienna, was invited to the Opera 10 minutes before the begining and was wearing old jeans a old leather jacket, nobody looked or had nasty comments.
