I really liked Caines. I was there a long time ago and stayed at the Colonial Club, really liked it at this resort. You can google it and check out the pictures, etc.. Never been to port Douglas, but spent a while in Caines. I could easily stay there for 7 nights and be quite happy.

I am planning to go 'up North' in winter (I'm in Melbourne).
My friends told me I should split my time between Cairns and Port Douglas to get the most out of the trip.
Just an idea....:)

I found Cairns a pretty boring town. You can party there a lot and do good and reasonable priced trips to the GBR, but if you rather relax for a week Port Douglas might be the better choice. It's also closer to Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation which you shouldn't miss out on. Stunning natural beauty up there!
By the way, have heard treetops resort in PD is a great place to stay. Isn't exactly for a backpacker's budget, though...

I lived in Cairns for 4 years! Its beautiful! Loads of things to do! The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas is one of the most scenic drives looking over the cliffs at the ocean and reef the whole way STUNNING - Port douglas is probably a little more expensive for accomodation, but is much closer to the attractions you want to see. A week there would probably be your best option if you wanted to see the Daintree/Mossman in depth.
However there are LOADS of tourism companies that would offer day trips from Cairns to those areas as that part of Queensland survives on Tourism.

I asked that exact same question to my cousin, who lives in OZ a couple of weeks ago. She said she usually goes on holiday to Port Douglas yearly on holiday as there is loads to do and beautiful beaches. All the trips to Cape Trib etc all run from there aswell.
Cairns, i have been told is nothing special another city! So we are just spending a couple of nights there. The Caravella backpackers resort looks fab so we are staying there when we go in Jan.

Also, i forgot look on www.breakfree.com as that's where we are staying in Port Douglas (breakfree portsea resort-it looks great and very reasonable too!)
