Could anyone recommend the best mobile phone sim to buy while I am in Australia?

I'll be there for three months, so I just want a pay as you go sim for light usage (likely I'll only use it for booking hostels, travel, etc).

Also, where can you buy sims from? Do 7-11s sell them?

And finally, what is the coverage like in Australia? I'll be flying into Perth and traveling up the West Coast and also around the South West, so I'll likely be visiting quite a few smaller towns.

If you are a light user Aldi SIM I reckon would be best. Their data packs are really competitive per megabyte, and if you need per minute their calls rates are about half the price per minute, compared to other companies. They also utilise the Telstra network which is the most extensive, if you are going outback best to choose something on the Telstra network. Amaysim is another one that has pretty decent rates. Vodafone is also pretty good and probably easier to find however they use the Optus network which isn't as extensive but stll covers a good 90% of the country.

Unfortunately Australia does suffer from blackspots even in major cities so don't be surprised if there are no bars on your phone I can't be certain 7/11 sells SIM cards, I saw them a few years ago in store so I assume they still do but quite a lot of little kiosk stores and what we call tobacconists also sell SIM cards, plus any major supermarket tends to sell SIM cards and of course for the big companies like Telstra and Optus they have their own stores.

When my friend came over (I live south west WA) I got her a Optus prepaid sim from Coles (supermarket) And just went into an Optus store and they set it up completely. Think the easiest thing would be to go to an actual phone store though then you can tell them what you want and they’ll find a package best for you. :)
