Hello! My boyfriend (35) and I (22) are planning on making a trip to Southeast Asia in May or June of 2018 for 10 days. This will be the first time in Southeast Asia for the both of us. I have researched some, but would love suggestions from the Travelers Point Community!

We are trying to decide between Indonesia or Vietnam. We are not very interested in night life, shopping/big tourist destinations, or spending a lot of time in the city. My boyfriends both surfs and scuba dives and we both love hiking and exploring nature (waterfalls, caves, cliffs, and beaches--yes please!). We would also love to experience the culture and trying local and street food (I've heard Vietnam is the place to go for street food) is definitely a big interest as well.

From the bit of research I have done, I think both countries are quite large and it would probably be better (with our limited amount of time) to spend more time in fewer places, rather than trying to see top to bottom of Vietnam or island hop across Indonesia.

Any suggestions on the country, popular destinations, accommodations (is AirBnB a good option for the cities?), etc would be appreciated!

Thanks so much! Much love!

10 days isn't really enough to see Vietnam properly and Indonesia is (I'd guess) 1,000 island, so even less chance of doing the whole country.
Of the 2, in only 10 days I'd suggest Vietnam, but even then you're just scratching the surface.
Say Saigon (HCMC) for 4 days (with a few tours), HoiAn for a couple of days, then Hanoi for 4 days and you're done.
You could swap HoiAn for Halong or Nha Trang or have a extra few days in any of those places.

Vote for Vietnam - 3 nights in each place among HCMC, Danang (Hoian) and Hanoi - Fly into HCMC and out of Hanoi.

I would go for Indonesia for the best beach experience.

Vietnam is a country that can boast about its amazing nature. . From mountain ranges in the north to deltaic regions in the south, Vietnam is dotted with magnificent limestone cliffs to majestic caves, white sand beaches, green fields, large network of rivers and many more. The new discovery among its natural wonders is Hang Son Doong which is the largest cave in the world. Besides its natural extravaganza, you will undoubtedly fall in love with Vietnamese cuisine and culture. A lot of street food options are available to taste but dont miss Pho, (i.e. rice noodles) which is a traditional Vietnamese food.
